What Is TMS?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, often referred to as TMS is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. TMS is typically used when antidepressant medications haven’t been effective, have ceased working, or as an alternative to medication.

What to Expect

Before Treatment

You’ll recline comfortably in the treatment chair. A small, curved magnetic coil will be positioned lightly on your head.

During Treatment

NeuroStar delivers focused magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of the brain. You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head.

After Treatment

Because there are no effects on alertness, you can drive yourself to and from treatment sessions.

Seven weeks recommended session length.

More About NeuroStar
Advanced Therapy TMS

Backed By Proven Research

During a NeuroStar Advanced Therapy treatment session, a magnet similar in strength to that used in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine is used to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain thought to control mood. The result of these magnetic pulses may have a positive effect on the brain’s neurotransmitter levels, making long-term remission achievable.

TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION

How TMS works

There are specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. We stimulate those areas with magnetic pulses.
FDA-CLEARED
TARGETED TREATMENT
NON-INVASIVE
DEDICATED CARE TEAM
FDA-cleared since 2008

Since the 1980s, treatment for depression has consisted mostly of antidepressants. Lots of people have felt better from antidepressants, but they don’t work for everyone. TMS therapy isn’t an antidepressant medication. Instead, it works by using gentle magnetic pulses.
Targeted to you

Unlike medications, which affect the entire body as they pass through the blood-brain barrier, TMS therapy targets depression at the source. That means you don’t have to put up with drug-related side effects, such as gastrointestinal problems, trouble sleeping, or weight gain.
Go right back to your day

Unlike other forms of brain stimulation, TMS therapy is non-invasive and non-sedating. Treatment sessions take place in our private centers and you can drive yourself to and from treatment. You can go back to work or school right away.
Dedicated to you

Your Care Team – providers, patient consultants, TMS technicians – are here for you. We work with you every step of the way to ensure you’re getting the care you need. Your TMS Technician will be with you during treatments and you’re free to chat with them or just sit and relax.

NeuroStar TMS Client’s Stories

The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is indicated for the treatment of depressive episodes and for decreasing anxiety symptoms for those who may exhibit comorbid anxiety symptoms in adult patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and who failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from previous antidepressant medication treatment in the current episode.

The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy system is intended to be used as an adjunct for the treatment of adult patients suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is only available by prescription. A doctor can help decide if NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is right for you. Patients’ results may vary.

The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is only available by prescription.
